Historic Site Wakayama Castle

In 1585, Hashiba （ Toyotomi ） Hideyoshi, after conquering Kishu, ordered his brother Hidenaga to build this castle on the peak of Okayama （ Torabushiyama ）. Wakayama Castle.
Takatora Tôdô and others were in charge of the construction of the castle, and it was the first full-scale castle built by Takatora in the modern period.

Hidenaga settled in Yamatokoriyama, and Shigeharu Kuwayama served as castle representative.
When the Hidenaga family ceased to exist, the Kuwayama family became the lord of the castle.
Toyotomi ・ worked to improve the mountain ridge area and Okaguchi during the Kuwayama period.

After the Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, Yukinaga Asano became the lord of 376,000 koku and undertook a large-scale expansion of the castle.
He built an interconnected castle tower and constructed a residence in the present Honmaru ・ Ninomaru ・ Nishinomaru.
Changed the Ote from Okaguchi Gate to Ichinobashi Gate and built a castle town with Honmachi-dori as the Ote-suji.

In 1619, Tokugawa Ieyasu's tenth son, ・ Yorinobu, received 555,000 koku and entered Japan, establishing the Gosanke Kishu domain.
In order to expand Ninomaru, a part of the western inner moat was filled in, and Minamimaru ・ Sunanomaru was incorporated into the inner wall, giving Wakayama Castle almost its present appearance.
The Kishu Tokugawa family, which was responsible for monitoring western Japan as the "township of the southern sea," produced the 8th shogun Yoshimune and the 14th shogun Iemochi.

With the abolition of feudal domains in 1871, Wakayama Castle came under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of War.
It was opened to the public as Wakayama Park in 1901 and designated as a historic site in 1931.
